7 Tips for Disney on Ice with Kids

This week, we spent the evening at Disney on Ice with the kids, and experienced the magic of their favourite characters, singing, dancing (skating) and creating an experience that I hope they remember from their childhood.

After the experience, we wanted to share some tips for families planning to enjoy the show –

Get a Discount | Buy tickets for the show early and use a discount to get them. Getting a discount helps to reduce the cost, especially if you’re buying tickets for a large family. Get on the list to learn about new shows coming to your area, and follow local news to find discount codes.

Dress Up | One thing that surprised me about the show is how few of the kids at the show were actually dressed up this time around. Making more magic out of the experience and dressing up in your favourite character is half the fun.

Be Prepared | Bringing wands from home can help to avoid the cost of $25-35 for glowing, battery operated wands and tiaras that are sold at the show. Even bringing along a small glow bracelet for the kids can help to make the experience more affordable, because you’ve already purchased tickets for the show and when you’re bringing along a bunch of kids, it can get expensive.

Plan it | The entire show lasted about two hours, as all Disney on Ice shows tend to run, so being prepared for the length of time can help you to be prepared when it comes to planning for bathroom breaks, or even determining if your kids are going to be able to make it through the entire show.

Layer Up | Though it’s fun to dress up in princess and other Disney costumes while you’re there, don’t make the mistake we did and forget to layer on top. We had a Tinkerbell who was a little chilly during the show because we layered on top of her dress, rather than under, and didn’t want to leave a sweater on while we were at the show.

Choose the Right Show | The Worlds of Enchantment show featured Toy Story, The Little Mermaid, Cars and Frozen. Choose a Disney on Ice show that’s going to have characters your children know and love, and skip the stories and characters they aren’t in love with. There are frequently changing shows, so don’t worry if a current show doesn’t have the characters you want to see.

Know the Costs | Glow in the dark and light up wands for the Edmonton show are between $25 and $35, slush and snow cones in Disney themed cups (that you can bring home) were around $16. Prices for beer, pop and other snacks were similar to Hockey games. Knowing the costs before you go into the show can help you to know how much to budget, and how much to bring.

Have Fun | Don’t be afraid to sing along, to clap, to get up and dance (if you’re a kid and you’re not going to block the show of others around you. Even as an adult, I found myself singing along with our seven year old – there’s something magical about Disney songs, so don’t be afraid to get up, have fun with it.

Are you heading to Worlds of Enchantment, Disney on Ice this weekend? Have a wonderful show – there are some magical moments!
