Discovering Canada’s hidden gems: Cat Creek Falls in Kananaskis

In celebration of Canada’s 150th birthday, InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) is launching a fun contest to find the top 150 hidden travel gems in our country. IHG sponsored this hotel stay and my participation in this campaign, but all opinions are my own.

Outside of Canmore, you’ll find a kid-friendly hiking trail with a wonderful pay-off – a true local hidden gem. The local trail that leads to a wonderful set of falls, worth the hour-long trail to reach it, is a great 1.3 trail for summer exploring.

Easily accessible with even young kids, we brought along toddlers on the trek – and they were easily able to complete the out and back trail, though a little slower than the older children on the trip.

To access Cat Creek Falls, you’re going to drive about forty minutes outside of Canmore, until you reach the day use area. Cat Creek Day Use area closed due to flood damage; visitors can park at a roadside pullout near the Cat Creek bridge. Keep in mind that the highway is quite busy, keep a close eye on the children crossing the road.

The hike is easily, and doesn’t come with huge elevation gains that make it difficult for children to reach the end of the hike, before they reach the end of their stamina. At the end, you’ll reach the 6-metre falls. With plenty of places to explore and parts of the creek where you can easily get across, and a wonderful little spot to dip your feet – cooling off at the end of a hot summer day.

Note: the stretch of highway to get to Cat Creek Falls is closed from December to June 15th – make sure you take this into account when you’re travelling to the Falls.

At the end of the day, when you’ve finished the hike, you can plan to stay the Holiday Inn Canmore. The two-story loft style rooms are perfect for young families, as it helps to create a bit of private space if you’ve got a child that needs a mid-day nap, or parents that want to escape for a few minutes while the kids play below.  With an outdoor hot tub, it’s a fun way for older children to run off some of the energy that hasn’t been expelled after the hike.
