8 Hot Weather Hacks for Edmonton Parents

Make Aloe Ice Cubes
I dread getting out the aloe gel, it’s messy – it’s hard to work with and the kids don’t usually like the texture. For those times that you’ve missed a spot with the sunscreen and want to cool off freeze gel in an ice cube tray and store them in a bag inside the freezer for easy application.

Get Rid of Sand
At the beach or the spray park and don’t want to bring the sand home with you? Give the kids a dose of baby shower over their legs and arms and the sand will come right off before you get in the car. It’s going to save you clean up time later!

Ice Block Fun
If you’re looking for something to do that’s going to cool off the kids, give them an ice block. Use a rubbermaid container filled with water (colored for more fun) and fill it with toys as the water freezes to provide them with something to melt, chip and play with as they retrieve the toys inside.

Frozen Fruit ‘Ice’
Use frozen strawberries, or frozen blueberries as ‘ice’ in drinks. It’s a fun way to create a new flavour and have something fun to drink during the summer months. If you’re packing for a beach trip, it’s a great way to keep drinks cool in the cooler, too.

Serve Cereal ‘Popsicles’ for Breakfast
Cereal ‘pops’ are an easy way to create breakfast that’s fun and fast. Freeze either ice, or yogurt and serve with a small bowl of dry cereal that the kids can dip the yogurt pop into, eating it while they’re cooling off. (recipe + image from Brit.co)

Sponge Fight
Want to cool off with a water fight, but without the water guns and cold blasts of water? Use sponges that you’ve soaked in water to have a fun water fight that’s going to cool you off, in a kid-friendly way. You can get sponges in packs of six from the dollar store, making it an easy, and cheap way to cool off.

Easy Mini Go Popsicles
Frozen Yogurt just got easier. Is there any other recipe that can enable you to make six frozen yogurt pops in under a minute? Stick them in the freezer and you’re ready to go. Get the full recipe and tips, here.

Bring your Own Shade
So many of the playgrounds and parks through the city don’t have shade available. Bring your own with a shade tent or pop up tent and don’t worry about getting too much sun or providing a place for kids to get out of the sun while you’re out and about.

Are you all ready for the summer heat? Try a few of these tricks and you’ll be able to deal with the hot summer sun just fine.
