Exploring the Alberta Railway Museum: Here’s What to Know Before you Go

The Alberta Railway Museum is one of those things that not many people in Edmonton are aware of. Tucked away on in an area that’s for the most part, undeveloped, it’s a field full of railway cars of many different types, ready to explore.

When we’re planning excursions for the kids, they’ve got to be interactive, and the Alberta Railway Museum checks all the boxes for being interactive, from providing cars where the kids can touch, feel, open drawers, sit and lay, on the various different types of trains in the yard. They can touch and interact with everything, rather than solely relying on sound and sight, to absorb the information and the experience.

Here’s what you should know before you visit the Alberta Railway Museum

  • The fee to visit is $30/family, or $10 adults and $5 for children between the ages of 5-12. We felt the admission was reasonable for the amount of time that you’re going to spend exploring the landscape. (plan for an additional $5/person if you want to ride the train)
  • Plan on being there for at least two hours. You’re hopping in and out of cars, exploring the yard, and you can even take in a train ride (an additional cost of $5/person) to cap off your experience
  • Steep stairs and ladders are used to enter the trains, keep this in mind if you’re travelling with small children that aren’t yet able to navigate those, there is going to be a lot of lifting up and setting down
  • Leave the stroller at-home. We opted to use the baby carrier for a portion of the adventure for our toddler, and spent the rest letting her walk at her own pace, discovering and climbing up and down the steep stairs, with a little help.
  • The Alberta Railway Museum has limited hours of operation, mostly limited to weekends during the summer season. Attend early in the day and you’ll feel like you’ve got the entire yard to yourselves.
  • There is a small souvenir shop, washrooms, and a place to buy drinks and food on site (via a food truck that was parked out front). We brought along our own snacks and drinks and ate at a picnic table on-site to reduce the costs of the adventure.

You will find the Alberta Railway Museum at www.albertarailwaymuseum.com and is located at 24215 – 34 Street. We were able to easily use our in vehicle navigation to locate the attraction.
