Cirque du Solieil Varekai: See it this Weekend #yeg

Last night on a date night we took in Cirque du Soleil Varekai. The costumes in the show were some of the most incredible that I’ve seen, especially so in the beginning scene and the water scene, I was enthralled with the attention to detail, bright colors and how they emphasized the movements of the performers.

From the sky falls a solitary young man, and the story of Varekaibegins. Parachuted into the shadows of a magical forest, a kaleidoscopic world populated by fantastical creatures, this young man sets off on an adventure both absurd and extraordinary. On this day at the edge of time, in this place of all possibilities, begins an inspired incantation to life rediscovered.

In most of the Cirque performances that we’ve seen, the story isn’t evident to me until I read through the program, but for those one, a lightbulb clicked in the second act.

Hilarious mini performances through the show would delight kids if you’re going to bring them along this weekend. These made me giggle and were a hilarious change from the show. The magician’s assistant is endearing, hilarious and had me thinking about how funny my daughter would find the show.

During the show, I had flashbacks of when I optimistically tried to take Olivia to see Josh Radin with me, as the kid beside me wanted to leave after the first five minutes of the show. If you’ve got a child sensitive to noise, it’s really loud in there, so bring earphones and enjoy the visual spectacular, or provide fair warning. Speaking of the music, it was incredible, and some of the most powerful of any performance I’ve seen.

Tip: You can get a family four pack of tickets for as low as $40/ticket. Cirque du Solieil Varekai is here for four days – making it the perfect family friendly weekend adventure.
