12 Things for Tweens/Teens to Do in Edmonton This Summer #yeg

There are a lot of activities around the city that are designed for families, or young children – but there are just as many programs and activities that are designed for tweens and teens, to keep them occupied through the summer months. Finding teen activities in Edmonton can come with some research, you’ve got to dig deep into the programs offered – but we’ve done the work for you.

Here are some great tween and teen activities for Edmonton teenagers searching for something to do through the summer months.

Head out to the Youth Drop in Lounge at Millennium Place
This Sherwood Park gem (pictured above) is designed for kids 10-17, features games for youth, an attached gym for drop in sports on the court and is open to teens only (no little kids) between 9-11 pm on Fridays and Saturdays. Regular drop in rates apply, but if you’re going to use it regularly, the monthly membership is a bargain.

Check out the YEGyouth Programs
Located throughout the city, the YEGyouth program feature free drop in programs, skateboard workshops and city wide events offered to youth ages 13-17. Activities include street hockey tournament (July 30), Skate competition (July 23), Arts Jam (August 6) and Hoops on the Square (August 13).

Take Part in the 124 Youth Program 
The 124 Youth Program is intended for Inglewood, Westmount, Prince Charles, and other surrounding areas Drop in times every week like Mondays & Wednesdays, from 4-7pm at Inglewood School (11515 127 street) featuring sports and activities like jewelery making and more. Special events happen every Saturday between noon and six, you can get the details at the drop in event.

Make a Video at Free Apple Summer Camp
Apple Camp is a place where kids ages 8 to 12 bring their imaginations to life. They’ll learn to make movies by storyboarding ideas, shooting video and creating an original soundtrack. Or, starting this summer, campers can create interactive books complete with their own illustrations and sound effects. Sign up today.

Spend time at the Skatepark 
Anyone can use City of Edmonton skateparks for free. Skateparks are open to any skateboarders, BMX riders, push scooters and inline skaters. Motorized vehicles are not permitted. If it’s raining and you want to head inside, check out the indoor skate park at West Edmonton Mall, in West49.

Go to Teen Swim at Terwillegar Rec Center 
The teen swim at Terwillegar Rec center is designed for 13-17 year olds, and takes place weekly. You can find the drop in schedule, here.

Take a Family Long Boarding Lesson
Take a family long boarding lesson on July 19, at Rundle Park. This pre-registered activity will fill fast, adults are $25 and 8+ children are $15. What a great way to get active and spend some time together on the weekend. Family lessons are available, as well as youth lessons (16+).

Get Cheaper Movies on Tuesday Nights
Cineplex movies are discounted on Tuesday nights, making it the perfect time to check out the new release that they’ve been wanting to see. Have a scene card? You can get an extra 10% off of the ticket price (and concessions) at the movie.

Evil Genius Club at Edmonton Public Library
Robot battles, Arduino hacks, DIY music, art, Minecraft, photography, 3-D design and printing are just the beginning for this club of maniacal makers. You’re invited to hang out, bring friends, try things and make stuff at this drop-in program. Plus, there’s lots of other clubs like Minecraft Club, 3D printing, gaming clubs, tween lounge, teen lounge, youth drop in and more you can find at the Edmonton Public Library website.

Drop in Shinny Hockey
Find the times for drop in Shinny hockey through the city of Edmonton at this schedule, two age ranges: from 10-12, 13-17. Regular facility drop in rates apply, great way to get out there and practice hockey.

Get Free Admission to the Art Gallery of Alberta
On the last Thursday of the month, plan a family or friend date to the Art Gallery of Alberta. Free admission is the perfect time to explore the galleries and check out the options for summer programming in the gallery.

Drop into a Teen Hip Hop Class at 3rd Street Beat 
At $20 a class, 3rd Street Beat drop in classes are a bit of a splurge but it’s a fun time to try something new and hone those moves for back to school parties. Come learn the foundation behind hip hop dance and get into the culture by learning the history and origins of the moves and applying them in a social dance setting. Creating a party is what this class is all about and we take it right back to the dancing!
