7 Reasons to Bring Your Kids to Ice on Whyte

Ice on Whyte is one of the festivals you’re not going to miss during a winter in Edmonton. Grab a hot chocolate and bundle up, you could see the ice sculptures – and the many other things there are to do with the kids while you’re there.

Here’s what to do at Ice on Whyte:

L’il Chipper Ice Carving Lessons in the Igloo

There are daily ice carving lessons for little kids in the Igloo. Kids can take part in the hour-long, drop-in lesson to learn to create their own masterpiece out of ice and bring home the information to attempt a carving in their own backyard. You can find the start times on the Ice on Whyte Calendar

Slide Down the Ice Slide

One of the best things to do during the winter in Edmonton is slide down as many ice slides as you can. The second one this year is going to be at Ice on Whyte, so make sure to wear snow pants for easy sliding – and warm bums.

Skate for free

During the festival, you can skate for free and there are even free skates to use while you’re there. That makes getting ready to leave the house just a little bit lighter ,

View the Sculptures

The kids have been enamored with the ice sculptures at previous festivals. Walking through, they were enthralled with the fact that someone created these sculptures – and we have always gone twice to get two different experiences: during the day and at night. With the family-affordable price tag of $20, it’s easy to go twice.

Get A Snow Shoe Lesson

January 31st, there are going to be two different sessions where festival-goers can learn to Snowshoe by the experts involved with Elk Island Park. You can head to the festival to take part, but remember it’s first come first serve, so check the calendar to see what time the demonstration and lessons begin.

Experience the Mardi Gras

To kick off Ice on Whyte, and to close the festival there’s a Mardi Gras parade and a Mardi Gras closing party. These are going to be filled with fun, and a great time to plan to see the festival and experience one of them. Remember to bundle up, most of the activities at the festival are outside.

You can Warm up in the Farmer’s Market

Warm up during the festival if you go to Ice on Whyte on a Saturday between 8 and 3 – head into the Farmer’s Market and find something delicious to eat, or get a hot drink. While you’re there you can find our favourite bagels.

Ice on Whyte takes place between January 21 and January 31, 2015. Get your tickets for Ice on Whyte.
