Eating with Kids in Edmonton? Try ‘The Dog’ in #yeg

Eating with the kids can be a painful experience, so you might as well make it a little more comfortable while you’re there – right? The Dog is the latest restaurant we’ve tried with the kids. They liked the tabletop arcade game and I liked the fact that there are ridiculously comfortable, sink-in booths that you can lounge in while eating comfort food hot dog.

The Saturday Special wasn’t too bad either; you get your choice of City Dog, a pint and fries for $12. The kids enjoyed the sliders ($8 for the trio) and a pretzel to share, and I ordered the trailer trash dog with chips and dip on the side.

The chips and dips were yummy, and eaten quickly. The warm, crisp chips were perfectly paired with a dill pickle dip that was gone way too quickly. Skip the pretzel with cheese sauce next time, the kids didn’t devour it and went for my chips instead. IMG_2668

The trailer trash dog topped with mac and cheese bacon was decent; it could have used a bit more pizazz in the mac and cheese, but it was like comfort food on a bun. Ordered with the side of chips I shared with the kids, it was more than enough food – like a meal on top of a hot dog with the generous portions of mac and cheese. I enjoyed it, Jamie enjoyed his Coney Island, though he preferred mine, and we agreed we would both come back next time when we were in the mood for hot dogs.

The SERVICE | attentive servers, quick food, and helpful with the suggestion of the trio of slider hot dogs for the kids to share. The kids were being maniacs, it was a late dinner, and the servers were very accommodating.

The PRICE | Price wise, it could have been less expensive if we didn’t order drinks and the pretzel and cheese sauce for the kids to share, the bill came to just over $40 with the tip, which I feel is a decent price for the four of us eating out at a restaurant – and the generous servings that came with it.

Next time around, we’ll be more adventurous, as there were things like kangaroo and alligator sausage on the menu, try a few more appetizers and go earlier in the evening to allow for ample time to try the recommended milkshakes before putting kids to bed at the end of the night.

Tip: Shop the house made pickles and extras at the back of the shop to bring home a taste of ‘The Dog’. You can find The Dog at 9567 118 Ave – it’s hard to find, it’s close to its sister restaurant, Sloppy Hoggs.
